Dean’s Distinguished Lecture

Decorative Image with two circular photos, one of Dean Nancy Coleman and one of Daniel Gilbert.

In celebration of the Division of Continuing Education’s 50th anniversary, we’re excited to launch the inaugural Dean’s Distinguished Lecture — a new annual event that will be part of Convocation week.

To launch the series, we’re thrilled to feature Daniel Gilbert, Ph.D., the renowned psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Stumbling on Happiness.

Lecture | The Science of Happiness: What Your Mother Didn’t Tell You
Everyone has a theory about happiness — about what it is and where it can be found. But in the last 20 years, psychologists, economists, and neuroscientists have discovered that many of these theories are wrong: Some of the things we all work so hard to get don’t actually make us happy, and some of the things we forget to work hard for actually do. What are the facts about human happiness, and what are the myths? Professor Gilbert will explain what scientists know about our often misguided quest for happiness.

This event is open to all members of the DCE and greater Harvard communities, and we hope it becomes a signature gathering for years to come.

Speakers

  • Nancy Coleman, Dean, Harvard Extension School and Continuing Studies
  • Daniel Gilbert, Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology, Harvard University
